The County Commission met last night for a voting session, but the single agenda item was withdrawn for further discussion.

During the meeting, several commissioners expressed concern that the SPCA would remove Commissioner Gilbert from their board.

4th District Commissioner Howard Thompson expressed concern and asked Cheryl Dunson, an SPCA board member, to address the Commission about the decision. Runs on cited bylaws that emphasize the importance of loyalty and adherence to organizational guidelines as the reason Gilbert was voted off the board.

Thompson expressed concern that a board member should not be removed for having a disagreement or for casting a vote as a county commissioner.

Bill Winters, 7th District Commissioner, also expressed concern, saying, “We as commissioners have pretty thick skin. But when one of our fellow Commissioners is vilified for acting on this side of the table according to what he thought he should do, we find it difficult to understand. But I do know that respect is expected from both sides.’

Third District Commissioner Milan Blake added to next week’s work session Agenda a proposal from the Finance Committee to approve a $15.1 million addition to Hopewell Elementary School.

The next committee will meet on May 13 at noon. You can watch yesterday’s meeting on mixtv.tv
