University profile

Breaking down: The new kickoff rules in the NFL, which should vastly increase the number of return opportunities a team has during a game, played a role in the Colts’ selection of Gould, with one of their goals this offseason being to become more dynamic in the return game. . With a speed of 4.39, Gould averaged a whopping 15.7 yards per return on 27 attempts with two touchdowns as a punt returner at Oregon State.

With Michael Pittman, Josh Downs, Adonai Mitchell, Alec Pierce and Ashton Dulin also at receiver, getting some snaps on offense could be an immediate challenge, but Gould could fill some specific roles with his speed as another vertical presence in the passing game – a key element in Shane Steichen’s offense – or as someone who gets the ball with designed touches in space, where his YAC skills can take over.

Last season, Gould averaged 16.2 yards per catch, with nearly 40 percent of his receptions going for at least 15 yards. He also has experience playing from the perimeter and slot, although most of his snaps with the Colts will likely come from inside. The Colts wanted more big plays this season, and Gould provides that in two phases of the game.
