University Protest Updates: Police begin dismantling the University of Chicago encampment

In a message to the campus community, Sally Kornbluth, president of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, gave students until 2:30 p.m. to vacate the campus encampment.

However, demonstrators remained in the area until after the deadline. It is unclear whether the police will intervene and make arrests.

“In short, this prolonged use of MIT property as a site for protest, without permission, especially on an issue over which there is such sharp disagreement, is no longer safely sustainable,” Kornbluth said.

According to Kornbluth, the encampment on MIT’s campus on the Kresge lawn has been going on for more than two weeks.
