Red Cross: May “Trauma Awareness Month” Good reason to donate

The American Red Cross is asking the public to donate blood or platelets during the month of May. Observed as “Trauma Awareness Month,” the organization says it is a reminder that hospitals must be prepared for all transfusion needs, including emergencies. At this time, blood donors of type “O” and donors who donate platelets are mainly needed. Type O negative is the universal blood type and what emergency room staff look for when there is no time to cross-match with a patient in an emergency. O Positive is the most commonly used type because any Rh-positive patient can get it. As for platelets, they are often needed to help with clotting in the event of massive bleeding.

The Red Cross is offering some incentives to donors in May. Those who donate this month will receive a coupon for a free haircut by email, and those who donate through May 19 will receive a $10 e-gift card to a merchant of their choice, and will automatically be entered to win a trip for two and VIP racing experience for the 2024 NASCAR Cup Series and Xfinity Races at Darlington Raceway over Labor Day Weekend.
