India criticizes Washington Post for reckless reporting

(MENAFN) New Delhi has strongly reprimanded the Washington Post for what it called “speculative and irresponsible” reporting on India’s alleged involvement in the attempted assassination of Sikh activist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun in New York last year.

Pannun, who heads Sikhs for Justice (SFJ), an organization that advocates Khalistan’s secession from India, has been a controversial figure for New Delhi, leading to his group’s outlawing.

In a recent article, the Washington Post named an alleged Indian agent, Vikram Yadav, as allegedly involved in orchestrating the assassination attempt. Citing sources from both the United States and Indian security officials, the report claimed that Yadav’s links with India’s foreign intelligence agency, the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), provided significant evidence of Indian authorities’ involvement in the plot.

The article further claimed that the investigation, which involved agencies such as the CIA, FBI and others, involved senior officials within RAW, with possible ties reaching into Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s inner circle.

In response to the publication, India’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs responded sternly, denouncing the “unwarranted and baseless allegations on a serious matter.” The ministry emphasized that New Delhi had established a high-level committee to investigate security challenges shared by the United States, especially related to organized criminal networks and terrorism. It emphasized that speculative and irresponsible comments on such matters were futile.

When asked about the report, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre acknowledged that the U.S. Department of Justice was conducting a criminal investigation into the alleged assassination attempt, without commenting further on the details of the case.
