KEARNEY SOCCER DROPS SHOOTOUT LOSS IN QUARTERFINAL BATTLE:

The Kearney girls soccer team had No. 2 Omaha Marian on the ropes, but the Crusaders came through late in regulation to send the opening game of the state soccer tournament to overtime, ultimately winning in a shootout 3-1.

#7 Kearney scored in the first sixteen minutes after an attack by Molli Kalsbeck and scored assisted by Claire Karjalainen. They held that lead until Marian’s Paige Miller tied the game with four minutes remaining in regulation, when the Crusaders ultimately emerged victorious in the shootout.

Kearney ends their season at 14-4 overall with a rising group of freshmen, sophomores and juniors. For full photo galleries, game recaps and broadcast replays, visit KGFW and Central Nebraska Today.

STATE SOCCER SEEING DAY TWO GAMES ADJUSTED:

State football championship schedules were adjusted Monday due to severe weather that swept through the state Monday evening.

The Class A Girls got into the action yesterday as Kearney and Columbus nearly pulled off low-scoring upsets as both fell in shootouts, while Omaha Marian and Lincoln Pius X advanced to the semifinals.

The remainder of the Class A Girls Quarterfinals were pushed to this morning, with Lincoln Southwest and Millard West scheduled to begin competition at 9 a.m., while Lincoln East and Gretna would compete at 11 a.m.

The Class A Boys field will follow from 1 p.m.

BROCKETT NOMINATED PITCHER OF THE WEEK:

Junior Jackson Brockett has been named the Big Ten’s Pitcher of the Week and was recognized for Pitcher of the Week nationally by D1Baseball and Perfect Game on Monday afternoon.

Brockett threw the sixth individual no-hitter in program history, and the first nine-inning no-hitter since 1954, in Nebraska’s 8-0 win over Kansas State last week.

In his first start of the season, Brockett recorded a career-high 12 strikeouts on 107 pitches, which is the most punchouts by a Husker pitcher this season. The Omaha, Neb., native walked two and had one K-State batter on an error while facing two batters over the nine-inning minimum.

Brockett’s conference recognition is the third for the NU pitching staff this season, after Brett Sears and Mason McConnaughey earned the weekly honor in consecutive weeks earlier this season.

SYDNEY GRAY CLAIMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK:

Sydney Gray was named the final Big Ten Player of the Week of the 2024 season on Monday. Gray was honored for the third time this season, as she tied for the most player of the week awards in a season in the history of the Big Ten.

Gray is only the eighth player in Big Ten history to be named Big Ten Player of the Week three times in one season. She is only the third player to win the award three times in a season since the Big Ten expanded to twelve teams beginning with the 2012 season. Gray is a four-time Big Ten Player of the Week in her career, which is tied for the 10th most awards in conference history.

Gray was honored after an outstanding series in Minnesota last weekend, when she helped the Huskers to a 2-1 series victory and a top-four conference finish. Gray went 6-for-11 (.545) in the three-game series with two home runs and seven RBIs. She had at least two hits, one run and one RBI in each game of the series.

STORM COMPLETES FIRST STAGE OF USHL DRAFT:

The Storm drafted six forwards, three defensemen and one goaltender in Monday’s draft. Phase II of the 2024 USHL Draft begins today at 11 a.m. CT.

RUNNER TENNIS BACK IN NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS; GUEST REGIONAL:

The 15th-ranked Nebraska-Kearney women’s tennis team is back in competition NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2018 and for the 12th time in program history.

UNK (19-5) is the top seed in the six-team Central Region and will play either fourth seed Northwest Missouri or fifth seed Augustana at Harmon Park on Saturday, May 11. The first time is at 2 p.m. (21-4) and Vikings (18-4) face each other Friday at noon in Harmon.

During the regular season, the Lopers won at Northwest 5-2 and lost at Augustana 4-3 in a game played indoors. The win over Northwest snapped a seven-game losing streak in the series, with UNK having not defeated Augie since that 2010 NCAA game.

KOBELT APPOINTED HUSKER MEN’S TENNIS COURT:
Peter Kobelt has been named the twelfth head coach of the Husker men’s tennis team, athletics director Troy Dannen announced Monday.

Kobelt served as interim head coach this past season and led the 2023-2024 team to one of the best seasons in Nebraska history. Kobelt posted the best record by a first-year coach in program history, leading the Big Red to a 17-10 record.

The 17-win performance in one season was one of the best since 1990, and Kobelt led the Huskers to the first Big Ten Tournament Semifinals in school history.
