Fatalities hit Washoe County, 3 fatalities this weekend

RENO, Nev. (KOLO) – Fatal car crashes kept Reno police and Nevada State Police busy during Cinco de Mayo weekend. Two pedestrians and a motorcyclist were hit by vehicles.

An Interstate 80 pedestrian crossing near Wells Avenue was struck and killed around 2:21 a.m. Saturday morning. Nevada State Police say the driver of the pickup was heading east. Police do not know why the man crossed the highway.

Just an hour later, a motorcyclist was struck by a vehicle at Ryland and High streets early Saturday morning around 3:19 am. Reno police say speed was a factor and the motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene.

The National Safety Council reports: “Over the past decade, deaths have increased by 32%, while mortality rates have increased by 13%. The number of motorcyclist fatalities now stands at 6,218 and the rate is 26.16 per 100 million vehicle kilometers. The number of non-fatal injuries increased by 2.6%, while the number of injuries decreased by 19% between 2021 and 2022.”

Around 4 a.m. Sunday morning, a vehicle struck a McCarran Boulevard pedestrian crossing, north of Sierra Highlands Drive, between Mae Anne. Reno police say the pedestrian was crossing without using the crosswalk. Speed ​​or impairment were not a factor and the pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to ZeroFatalitiesNV, there were 41 fatal accidents in 2021 and 55 fatal accidents in 2022.

Local police encourage people to cross at the crosswalk and slow down while driving.
