Miniature horse racks up big vet bill recovering from illness in Gallatin County

BOZEMAN — Angel is a one-year-old miniature horse from Texas who has had a rough start in life. Despite her small stature, she has proven to be quite tough.

“We call her Angel because she has angel eyes,” Bill York said.

Before Angel found a home at Cowboy Heaven Mini Horse Safe Haven in the Amsterdam area, she lived at a horse auction in Billings.

“They can pick up diseases from sales,” York said.

Bill York and his sister run the nonprofit, rescuing and rehabilitating miniature horses, ponies, donkeys and more.

“We will travel anywhere to pick up an animal that needs help,” York said.

When they rescued Angel, she was seriously ill.

“She came with some bacteria, flu,” York said.

Angel spent a week in the hospital until returning home on May 2.

But Bill says her recovery is far from over.

“She’ll probably have lifelong lung problems,” York said. “There is a whole list of medications that she takes once or twice a day until she can start breathing better on her own.”

She paid some big vet bills for a small horse: $3,000 to be exact.

This little girl will have lifelong medical bills.

That’s why Bill needs some help from the community to ensure Angel lives a healthy, happy life.

“People in the Gallatin Valley and Montana care about animals,” York said. “These little guys are expensive, but worth it.”
