When it comes to Republicans expressing the belief that the United States is a republic, not a democracy, it’s time to put them on mute.

That’s according to The new abnormal co-host Andy Levywho discusses the issue while delving into the RNC’s announcement last week that it, along with the Trump campaign, had filed suit against Nevada’s secretary of state for allowing mail-in ballots to be mailed out until four days after the election are counted.

“They hate democracy, they don’t want democracy,” Levy said of the RNC. “You hear it all the time. One of their favorite sayings is, ‘America is not a democracy, it’s a republic,’ which is ahistorical nonsense.”

For example, in 2020, Senator Mike Lee (R-UT) scored a lot of attention by posting on Tweet: “We are not a democracy.” In 2022, then-GOP candidate for the Arizona state legislature Selina Bliss said, “We are a constitutional republic. We are not a democracy.”

Levy explains: “We are a representative democracy. The founding fathers were very clear that they all believed we were a democracy, but they (the Republicans) like to say that because we don’t vote directly on every issue, that elected representatives do that instead, that we are not a democracy . democracy. And it’s trash. As soon as you hear someone say that – and it’s always Republicans – as soon as you hear someone say that, you can absolutely shut them out for lying to you.”
