Gun jams as man tries to shoot Pennsylvania pastor during service (video)

NORTH BRADDOCK, Pa. — A man is accused of trying to shoot a pastor during a church service but the gun jammed, allowing a congregant to knock him to the ground in an incident that was caught on video.

Police say they later found a body at a nearby home where the suspect, Bernard J. Polite, 26, of Braddock, had been shortly before he went to Jesus’ Dwelling Place Church and tried to shoot Pastor Glenn Germany. CNN reports that the victim was identified as Derek Polite, 56, a relative of the suspect.

Germany was delivering his sermon on Sunday when Polite walked in, pointed the gun at the preacher and tried to shoot, NBC Philadelphia reported. Video shows Germans ducking behind a podium when the cannon failed to fire.

The video shows the suspect calmly stepping over a railing toward the stage when a parishioner runs up from behind and grabs him. He pulls the suspect to the ground and Germany then comes forward to help disarm him.

Polite said “God told me to do it” and that he planned to shoot Germany and “wait until he was arrested” so he could go to jail and clear his head, according to court documents.

Germany tells WTAE Channel 4 he had never seen Polite before. “I’m grateful to God that I’m still here because he definitely pulled the trigger,” Germany told WTAE.

There were about 25 people in the church at the time of the incident, including Germany’s 14-year-old daughter.

Polite has been charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault and recklessly endangering another person, according to court records.
